The first lesson about freedom I learned is that it is truly worthwhile to ‘trust thyself’ as Emerson suggests.  S4 physics ideas grew by struggle and conviction as well as being accompanied by metaphysical experiences.  Orthodox views of such experiences are not merely ‘subjective’ but also via mental diseases.  S4 physics can be thought of as a joint effort to produce a coherent maximally parsimonious physics that can directly address the metaphysical aspects of existence.  The concreteness of what is meant by ‘metaphysical’ in S4 physics is produced by the description of electromagnetism as a 1-form on a 4-sphere which can, in principle, be empirically investigated.  I have not designed any instruments of this type yet because S4 models themselves need more work and elaboration before sensible instrumentation could be designed.  But on theoretical problems: the Lamb shift, weakness of gravity, explanation of quantum phenomena, etc. the S4 physics approach produces clear and simple answers.  Metaphysical phenomena cannot be studied without understanding the precise ways in which electromagnetism is not a $U(1)$ gauge theory (and how it is intrinsically four-dimensional).
